Overview

Anchor InstallationAnchor installation is the process of re-uniting damaged structures using a stitching bar or anchor, sometimes bonded with cementations or resin grouts. An Anchor is basically a metal tie that holds concrete parts together, or is used to attach objects or structures to concrete.

There are broadly two types of anchors: mechanical and chemical. Within these there are various anchor formats that are used for different applications. Selection of the anchor fixing depends on not only the construction material and the type of installation, but also the stress to which it will be exposed.

Chemical anchors are essentially steel studs, bolts and anchorages that are bonded into a substrate, usually masonry and concrete, using a resin based adhesive system. Mechanical anchors are generally fixed by screwing them on to the concrete. These fixtures have different load bearing mechanisms for different uses.

Application

Chemical Anchors Chemical Anchors

These are ideally suited for load critical applications, and in virtually all cases the resulting bond is stronger than the base material itself and as the system is based on chemical adhesion, no load stress is imparted to the base material. These are used for close to edge fixing, reduced centre and group anchoring; and for use in concrete of unknown quality or low compressive strength.

The injection cartridge systems are the most widely used chemical anchor formats and consist of high bonding resin cartridges or capsules used with the anchor bolts for greater load bearing capability. They can be used with variable types and sizes of anchor bolts and fixings; the resulting non-sag mix makes this system the preferred choice for horizontal and overhead installations and perforated and hollow masonry.

Widely used chemical Anchors include steel rods or sleeves, with adhesive capsules or packs of varying strengths to suit different applications like hand rails, road signs and markings, concrete reinforcement, facades, renovations, awnings, electrical installations, etc

Mechanical Anchors

Mechanical AnchorsSuited for a variety of applications, mechanical anchors have different methods of operation as per the required strength. In fixings with frictional connection, the expansion part of the anchor is pressed against the hole wall, and the outer tensile loads are held by friction. In positive connection the fixing geometry matches the shape of the substrate and /or of the hole.

Widely used steel anchors include: anchor bolts or studs, heavy duty and lightweight sleeve Anchors.

Anchor expansion bolts are ideal for flexible installation, for use in cracked and non-cracked concrete. Heavy duty sleeve anchors are used for structurally demanding fixings, whereas the lightweight sleeve fixings are used for non-structural and non-safety critical applications.

These anchors are best for applications that include steel constructions, railings, cable trays, machines, staircases, gates, window elements, consoles, gratings, facades, etc; and can be used to fix timber structures, anchor heavy duty racking, and heavy plant and machinery. They are extensively used in different projects, from standard buildings to dams and nuclear power plants.
